1h45: The greatest coach in Saints history – by far – has decided it’s time to move on.
5:00 a.m.: Those inside the building and those who worked for Sean Payton have a big advantage in becoming his successor.
6:30 a.m.: The hardest part about leaving Payton is just being able to understand that this team is being run by someone else. But we should have seen it coming.
8:05 a.m.: There have only been 27 coaches in the NFL’s 102-year history who have coached as long as Payton, and only 12 before him have coached as long with one team. And the names are quite impressive.
1:30 p.m.: Sean Payton’s coaching tree is growing. We encourage the coaches and players who have been here and worked with and for him.
3:45 p.m.: It didn’t take long for the coach to realize how special this fan base is and what it means for the team. It’s one of the main reasons he got off to a flying start in 2006. Oh, and Drew Brees too.
24:05: Sean Payton had a very high standard to be able to coach or play here. Just another mark of a great head coach.
11:20 p.m.: Relationships with Mickey Loomis and the Bensons also played a big part in his staying here for as long as he did.
32:25: Sean Payton will be coaching again – somewhere. He has too much fire not to win another Super Bowl.
39:20: Why now? This season has been very different, and it has certainly been expensive.
44:45: Was Tuesday the saddest day in the history of the Saints? How could that be?
